Resilience in Nat Gas Production Weighs on Prices

Posted by

Today, EIA released it monthly report on natural gas production for December and while production was off .7% for the Lower 48 states the decline was less than anticipated.  The decline in production from older conventional fields continues in such states as New Mexico and Texas but is increasingly being offset by growth from the newer shale fields in in Louisiana (Haynesville) and other states Arkansas (Fayetteville) and PA (Marcellus) fields.  (See graph below).

This continued growth of newer shale production is helping to stabilize natural gas prices in what has been a colder than average winter.   While storage may end the withdrawal season on March 31st at…

Posted by

Prompt month (March ’10) natural gas is below $5/mmbtu for the first time since the first week of December amid milder near-term weather and forecasts trending warmer toward the middle part of next month.  Temperatures have moderated in key gas consuming regions before dropping back below normal late this week.  Moving into March, more normal temps are expected for parts of the upper Midwest, with a growing possibility that the warmer temps will push further south as the month progresses.

In the week to February 12th, 190 Bcf was withdrawn from storage, smaller than expected for what was the coldest week since the first week of…
