Constellation Energy Announces Acquisition of CPower

We were pleased to announce last Friday that Constellation Energy signed an agreement to acquire the privately held demand response (DR) company CPower, which has an 850 MW book of business in New England, New York, PJM, ERCOT, California and Ontario and has built itself into an industry leader as one of the earliest providers of DR services.   This acquisition will more than double the size of our DR team and increase our overall dispatchable DR load to 1,500 MW.

Tropical Update

As of Friday morning, Hurricane Karl has maximum sustained winds of 120 mph and is located in the far southwestern Gulf.  Karl is expected to make landfall late Friday in mainland Mexico, possibly as a category 4 hurricane.  

Igor and Julia are still expected to go out to sea.  Igor could graze Bermuda on Sunday.

Tropical Update: “Invest 92″- Possible Threat to the Gulf

Invest 92, an area of organized storms, is currently located in the southeastern Caribbean.  This system is likely to drift slowly west-northwest into the Caribbean over the weekend and early next week , eventually becoming a more organized storm.  Water temperatures in the Caribbean are exceptionally warm, and overall atmospheric conditions are favorable for development.  By late next week, models are tracking this system into the southern Gulf of Mexico.  No definitive track can be determined until further development in this system.

Last week, an op-ed in The San Francisco Chronicle reported that “the cost to charge an electric vehicle is comparable to 75 cents per gallon of gas,” which means that “owners can save upwards of $2,000 each year or more, especially since gas prices are likely to climb.”

Weak ISM Data Pulls Down Crude Oil Futures

October 2010 WTI crude oil is off over $1/bbl Friday morning, following a weak ISM non-manufacturing report.  ISM non-manufacturing data came in lower than expected, led by new orders which which fell 4 points resulting in the slowest rate of month-to-month growth this year.  The headline index fell to 51.5 in August, down 3 points and the worst reading since January.  This was a contrast to this past Wednesday’s ISM report, which showed that economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in August for the 13th consecutive month.
