Constellation’s 16.1-Megawatt Solar System Wins ‘Best Solar Project of 2012’

On January 15th, 2013, Constellation was honored to receive the award for ‘Best Solar Project of 2012’ at the 5th annual Solar Power Generation USA event in Newport Beach, CA.

The award recognized our 16.1 megawatt (DC) grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) solar system, which was installed in Emmitsburg, MD and completed in July 2012 (pictured below). The system is one of Maryland’s largest operational solar installations and supplies an estimated 20 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of emissions-free electricity per year to the state of Maryland through its Department of General Services and the University System of Maryland. According to U.S. EPA data, generating the same amount of electricity using nonrenewable sources would result in the release of 17,981 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

The 16.1 megawatt system is just a portion of the 125 megawatts of customer-sited solar installations that we currently own, operate or have under development for commercial and government customers throughout the United States. A large part of our success in the solar field involves offering solar installations that require little to no upfront capital from customers and may provide fixed power costs that are less than projected market rates.

“Constellation is proud to bring one of the state’s largest solar installations online and support Maryland’s leadership in renewable energy,” said Kenneth W. Cornew, president and CEO of Constellation, during last August’s dedication ceremony. “Projects like this are part of our commitment to provide customers clean, affordable energy choices.”

Universities, school systems, hospitals, government agencies, and commercial customers interested in on-site solar installations of 1 megawatt or larger may contact Constellation at sustainable-solutions@constellation.com or 1-877-427-2005.
