Stocks Remain at Record Highs Despite Increased Demand Limiting Storage Injections

Unprecedented levels of coal-gas switching in the first half of 2012 has helped increase total demand for natural gas.  From January through mid-August, natural gas demand for power generation increased 24% year-over-year.  In April 2012, the EIA reported that monthly shares of coal- and natural gas-fired generation were equal for the first time.  This summer, 17 of the 25 highest days of power burn since 2005 occurred between June 28 and August 9.  Hot weather and low natural gas prices boosted demand and contributed to an increase in coal-to-gas switching by 4 Bcf/day in July and August.
