Groundbreaking Report Supports Leading Role of Natural Gas for a Low-Carbon Future

Posted by

The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) two-year study “The Future of Natural Gas,” shows considerable potential for the U.S. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next 40 years through the consumption of less coal and more natural gas. According to the 83-page report released last month, “natural gas will play a leading role in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, largely by replacing older, inefficient coal plants with highly efficient combined-cycle gas generation.”

This influential study supports the direct relationship that my colleagues and I have recognized between natural gas and lowering greenhouse gas emissions for quite some time.

Among the…

National Weather Service Predicts Above-Normal Temperatures Through Dec.

Posted by

The National Weather Service announced late last week that from August to October above-normal temperatures are likely for most of the lower 48 states except for the Pacific Coast, Northern Intermountain West region, and most of the Great Plains territory.

The National Weather Service also reports that the above-normal temperatures are likely to last into December for the Southern U.S. and the Northeast. The National Weather Service attributes this abnormal weather pattern to La Niña conditions, which are likely to develop by late summer.

The La Niña condition includes cooler than normal water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, which is…

USGS Survey Study Shows Promising Future for Natural Gas Production in North Dakota & Montana

Graphic source: USGS

Since the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment of the Bakken Shale Formation was released well over a year ago, my colleagues and I have been analyzing the implications of the USGS’s findings on the future production of natural gas. The USGS is known as the only source of publicly available information pertaining to undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources.

Their assessment of the Bakken Shale Formation in Montana and North Dakota has shown a significant impact on our nation’s potential as a…
