The EPA Proposes Easing its Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR)

On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it was proposing adjustments to its Cross-State Air Pollution Rule. The final rule, released on July 7, directed 27 states to cut NOx and SOx emissions by 73% and 54% respectively, beginning January 2012.

The primary source of these emissions is coal generation plants.

The rule immediately received criticism from politicians and the states it impacts. The opposition argues that the timeline for compliance is too aggressive and that the ruling would cause grid reliability issues and massive job losses in some states. Nine of the states have filed with the D.C…

FCC’s National Broadband Plan Aims to Enhance the Energy Industry

Last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) submitted a National Broadband Plan to Congress, seeking to ensure that people throughout the U.S. have access to broadband technology.  Amongst the primary goals is the objective to position the U.S. as a global leader in the clean energy economy and the focus includes the modernization of the Smart Grid using broadband and other advanced communications technologies.  The FCC envisions that broadband will be a part of the Smart Grid, enabling the flow of energy data through the Internet and resulting in increased customer access to real-time energy usage.   …
