2013 Clean Energy Challenge

Where are the smartest minds in clean energy putting their development efforts? Instead of “pie in the sky” ideas, it appears energy technology developers are focusing on solving real problems with practical solutions.

Earlier this month, seventeen “early-stage” companies and student finalists competed for $300,000 in prizes at the 2013 Clean Energy Challenge in Chicago.  The Challenge brought together some of the most promising clean energy businesses and university programs in the Midwest with the potential to bring game-changing innovations to the marketplace.  These businesses and programs represented various aspects of clean energy, from biomass development and smart grid to improved wind turbines and advanced bearing technologies.…

Constellation Solar Project to Meet About 60 Percent of the Electricity Needs for Five Arizona Schools

Posted by

Core Somerton Solar Desert Sonora

On April 17th, Constellation and  Somerton School District were pleased to announce the completion of an aggregate 1.6-megawatt (DC) solar generation project in Yuma County, Arizona. Located at five sites — Desert Sonora Elementary School, Orange Grove Elementary School, Somerton Middle School, Tierra del Sol Elementary School and Valle del Encanto Learning Center — the installations are expected to collectively generate enough electricity to meet approximately 60 percent of the schools’ electricity needs.

“Supporting solar generation helps our district to save operating costs and serves as an educational resource for students,” said Jerry Cabrera, human resources and operations director for Somerton School District. “An added benefit is that the panel structures provide needed shade for parking and play areas.”

Constellation owns and maintains the solar power systems. Somerton School District purchases the electricity generated by the solar panels from Constellation under a 20-year solar services agreement.…

Understanding Transmission Costs in Your Power Bill

Posted by

In addition to energy supply cost, retail electricity prices include many other components such as transmission, ancillary service, and capacity costs. In this series, we will discuss these various components, their rates and what it means to customers of competitive energy suppliers. So, here are some answers to frequently asked questions we have received about electricity transmission rates.

What is electric power transmission?

Electric-power transmission is the bulk transfer of electrical energy, from generating power plants to electrical substations located near demand centers. The U.S. electric transmission grid consists of more than 200,000 miles of extra high-voltage transmission lines (230 Kilovolts and greater).  Electricity travels at nearly the speed of light, arriving at a destination at almost the same moment it is produced. Transmission lines, when interconnected with each other, become transmission networks, typically referred to as “power grids” or simply “the grid.”

Transmission is distinct from power distribution, which is the local wiring between high-voltage substations and customers. Transmission infrastructure may be owned, operated and maintained by electric utilities or independent transmission owners.…
