Buying vs. leasing home solar systems

Posted by

If you’ve done your homework and are convinced solar energy is right for you, then you might be wondering what to do next. If you’re like many people, the upfront costs of buying a system may seem like a challenge. But it doesn’t have to be; leasing is always an option.

Several solar providers, like Constellation, have started offering leasing programs to their residential customers. Currently we offer our programs with Astrum Solar in select states*. It’s an attractive option for anyone who can’t afford the upfront investment, which can cost as much as $30,000 or more depending on the size of the system and available incentives.

Under our 20-year leasing program, you have two basic choices. You can either put no or low money down, then pay monthly for your solar power. Or you can pay your lease payments in one lump sum in advance and save even more each month on your electricity costs. Whatever option works best for you, you can begin realizing savings immediately.

Aside from removing or reducing the upfront costs, our leasing program offers other benefits:

– You select the solar panels and system size that best meets your energy needs and budget.
– You don’t own the equipment and you’re not responsible for maintaining it, either. Should something go awry, break, or just wear out, we fix it. This also includes monitoring the system.
– Your monthly electricity bill can be lower than your current utility bills. Though cost savings vary and depend on a variety of factors, many people save as much as 10 percent less than prevailing electricity prices in their area.
– With very good credit, leasing is as easy as signing your name on the contract.

If the upfront costs aren’t an issue, you could consider buying your own system. But carefully weigh the pros and cons. Your total monthly electricity bills will be lower than if you leased the equipment, but you may have to finance the purchase and maintain the system yourself.

Whatever you decide, it’s good knowing you have options. Whether you lease or buy, the payoffs are immediate and long lasting. To learn more about how we can help you save your green, call us at 877-427-2005 or visit our website: www.constellation.com/residential/pages/solar-energy.aspx.
