Constellation Works with NYCHA to Offer Improved Housing, Career Development for Residents

In 2018, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) announced a major sustainability project with Constellation that called for energy efficiency improvements to 41 NYCHA developments encompassing 240 buildings and more than 28,000 residences.

Through this project with Constellation, NYCHA is exemplifying its priority of continuously enhancing the quality of residential housing while also expanding growth opportunities for its residents.

Energy conservation upgrades implemented by Constellation include exterior and interior LED lighting, building automation heating controls and water conservation, and are designed to increase energy reliability for residents.

“[The project(s)] managed by Constellation play a critical part not only in meeting our energy goals but also in delivering the reliable and consistent heat that our residents deserve,” said Bomee Jung, vice president, Energy and Sustainability for NYCHA, at the onset of the project.

As part of its mission to increase access to job readiness and training initiatives, NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment & Sustainability collaborated with Constellation to launch a workforce development program that placed NYCHA residents on the fast track to sustainable careers as electricians. Constellation sponsored the program by funding a training course (geared toward helping residents pass an initial aptitude test), providing transportation assistance and meals, and supplying residents who passed the test with an electrician’s toolkit.
