How Developing & Maintaining a Stadium’s Energy Infrastructure Has Helped the Steelers
< 1 min readWhich team does your office want to win the Big Game this Sunday? While the employees of our large, national company are likely to be evenly divided between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers, we can’t help but look back on the work we’ve done on Heinz Field, the home of the Steelers.
When the Steelers found themselves faced with escalating construction costs for their new stadium and a complex competitive energy market, they needed both the capital and the technical expertise to outsource a critical component of their stadium operation — its energy infrastructure.
To remain focused on their core business of football, Heinz Field chose Constellation to build, own, operate, and maintain their central energy plant to heat, cool, and provide hot water supply to the stadium. The scope of the 20-year term project includes:
- Design and construction of the central energy plant, which allows 33 percent more capacity, making it possible for Constellation to serve adjacent building development and further drive down operating costs for Heinz Field.
- Energy cost savings of $1.25 million over the first five years; Heinz Field saved an estimated $4.6 million from their capital budget 20-year term with 10-year renewal options.
- Early completion of the energy plant, completed a month ahead of schedule and within 1 percent of the original budget estimate.
