Webcast: Expectations for Natural Gas this Winter and Beyond
2 min readIn the latest episode of Fortunato & Friends, Exelon Chief Economist Ed Fortunato interviews Erin Blanton, Senior Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). They discuss what to expect from natural gas markets this winter, through 2021 and into the future. Keith Poli, a member of Constellation’s Commodities Management Group, moderated the conversation and shared his insights.
The three speakers deliberated the following questions and much more:
- As winter begins, what do you expect from gas prices, demand and exports? What will be the most important near-term market drivers?
- The U.S. has become one of the world’s top producers and exporters of natural gas. What is the importance of liquified natural gas (LNG), both internationally and domestically? What do you see happening in the U.S. LNG market in 2021?
- Weather drives heating and LNG demand. If we see warmer-than-average winter temperatures and subdued natural gas prices as a result, should we expect gradual production declines to extend into 2021-22?
- Current prices are insufficient to incentivize investment in drilling, and there are many other competing options for capital expenditures. What does this mean for future oil and gas valuation and investment?
- Coal was dominant until 2007 but was replaced by gas with the “shale revolution.” Is there an expectation that gas could be similarly displaced by renewables? How might this reshape energy industry economics going forward?
- What do we predict that the energy industry will look like in 2025?
