White House Highlights Constellation-NHL® Partnership, Commends Joint Sustainability Efforts

2 min read

In honor of the inaugural Green Sports Day, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) celebrated Constellation and the National Hockey League® for their partnership in leading the fight against climate change and for their continued effort to reduce the League’s environmental impact and move toward a healthier planet, in their new fact sheet on tackling climate change through sports.

Constellation will support the League in implementing NHL Greener Rinks, a program that will assess the environmental impact of NHL® rinks and community rinks across America. Using new technology that aims to advance environmental sustainability, Constellation will work with facilities to pursue a smarter approach to energy management that reduces their carbon footprint. Through Constellation’s signature Efficiency Made Easy® program, eligible and interested facilities collaborating with Constellation on their energy management will have the opportunity to implement energy conservation measures with no upfront investment.

Recognizing the direct impact climate change could have on the future of hockey, and the importance of responsible energy use, the NHL® named Constellation  its official energy provider in 2014 to ‘change the game’ for sustainability in sports and support the NHL Green™ movement.

In the time since, Constellation has helped the NHL® offset its entire carbon footprint for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons, counterbalancing more than a million metric tons of emissions which, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) measures, is equivalent to the removal of more than 230,000 cars from the road for a year, as well as overhaul numerous facilities and events to use less energy. The efforts resulted in the NHL becoming the first professional sports league to receive a Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. EPA. Additionally, Constellation and the NHL® have been able to spread environmental awareness by engaging the NHL’s 54.5 million fans through social media, on-site events, broadcasting appearances and public service announcements.

In its official capacity, OSTP works to promote and develop sound science and policy measures. In recent months, OSTP called on the sports community to address climate change, a looming concern that could uniquely impact the world of athletics, an area where Constellation has already stepped up to the plate through our partnerships with the NHL, as well as the PGA of America and numerous other organizations across the professional sports industry to pursue energy efficiency upgrades and maintain a new standard of sustainable facilities.

Constellation is proud to continue its partnership with the NHL® and connect fans to green initiatives and ignite this critical discussion. The renewal of the partnership for the 2016-2017 Season is a sign of a successful partnership that is helping the NHL® lead the charge among sports leagues toward greater energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
