Massachusetts Municipalities Celebrate 20 Years of Energy Choice
2 min readThis year marks the 20th anniversary of the MunEnergy Program, an exclusive relationship between Constellation and the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA).
In March of 1998, Massachusetts was one of five New England states facing electricity deregulation. The primary purpose of offering energy choice to consumers was to create competition within the wholesale and retail electricity market, ultimately incentivizing retail energy providers to keep their rates competitive. However, the increased competition also led to an increased need for education around energy management initiatives for residents, businesses, towns and government agencies.
Officials at the MMA, a non-profit organization working to aid cities and towns on advocacy and policy development, immediately recognized the need for education and energy management strategies for their membership.
After a competitive request for proposal (RFP) process, the MMA chose to team up with Constellation as its endorsed energy supplier. Together, Constellation and the MMA launched the MunEnergy program. The goals of the program were to provide MMA members with exclusive electricity and natural gas contracts that were negotiated and vetted by the MMA’s attorneys who specialize in municipal energy issues, flexible terms to meet unique community needs and strategic guidance in navigating typically volatile markets.
Now celebrating its 20th year, the program has helped more than 120 Massachusetts cities, towns and government entities better manage their energy usage while being sensitive to municipal budget concerns.
Constellation and MMA officials were present at this year’s MMA Annual Meeting in Boston on January 19-20th, 2018, to discuss the benefits of this 20-year relationship, the benefits of the MunEnergy program and our endorsed relationship with ChargePoint®.
